Creating an Outline Numbered List

Numbered lists are invaluable in books and manuals that present a lot of step-by-step procedures.

Use bulleted lists when you want to present alternatives to the reader. A bullet is a black filled-in circle or other character.

Continue a Numbered List

Suppose that you want a numbered list to pick up where a list you entered earlier ended. Microsoft Word help with this action easily.

In other words, suppose that you ended a four-step list a couple of paragraphs back and now you want the list to resume at 5.

To continue a numbered list, follow these steps:

1. Position the cursor on a new line.

2. Click the Numbering button to start numbering again.

OR

Choose Format ► Bullets and Numbering.

Or right-clicking and choose Bullets and Numbering from the shortcut menu.

3. In the Bullets and Numbering dialog box, click the Numbered tab.

4. Click the Continue Previous List option.

5. Click OK.

Restart a Number List

You can have many different numbered lists in the same document. It might happen that you click the numbering button, but it doesn't start at number 1. If you want to start a new numbered list, you can do this very easily anywhere in the document.

To restart a number list, follow these steps:

1. Position the cursor at the spot where you want to start a new numbered list.

2. Click the Numbering button to start numbering again.
Right-click the number and choose Restart Numbering from the shortcut menu.

OR

Choose Format ► Bullets and Numbering.

Or right-clicking and choose Bullets and Numbering from the shortcut menu.

3. In the Bullets and Numbering dialog box, click the Numbered tab.

4. Click the Restart Numbering option.

5. Click OK.
